History of Jeramiah’s Home & Bertoni Palliative Care Centre

A Vision Born from Compassion

The journey of Jeramiah’s Home & Bertoni Palliative Care Centre began when Mr. K.J. Peter, the Chairman of the institution, and a group of trustees, started offering food and emotional support to patients and bystanders in the isolation ward of Ernakulam General Hospital, initially under Rosary of Divine charitable Trust. Due to the limited space in the isolation ward and the increasing number of patients requiring prolonged treatment and care, the need for a separate facility to accommodate these patients became urgent.

In 2013, this need led to the establishment of Jeramiah’s Home and Bertoni Palliative Care Centre, initially operating in a seminary building at Poykattussery, Athani. With guidance from Adayantharath Bishop and the support of the local community, the center began its journey by caring for 40 bedridden patients.

The main aim of Jeramaih was to provide not just physical care, but emotional and spiritual support for those in their most vulnerable moments.

Expanding Care From
Athani to Vypin

After successfully running the palliative care services in Athani, the trustees recognized the need to relocate to a more accessible location closer to the city, easing commuting challenges for patients, staff and visiting doctors. This led to the decision to move the center to a rented home in Vypin. However, the space was limited, and the trustees knew a more permanent solution was necessary.

In partnership with Cancure Foundation, Jeramiah’s Home purchased a 15-cent plot of land in Ochanthuruth, Kochi, where the foundation’s new building was constructed. The ground floor of the building was dedicated to a dialysis unit under Cancure Foundation, while the first and second floors were designated to house male bedridden patients of Jeramiah.

In 2021, after years of hard work, prayer, and community support, Jeramiah’s Home successfully relocated to the Cancure Foundation’s building in Ochanthuruth. While operating within the Cancure facility, we established ourselves as a separate wing, taking over the first and second floors. Here, we built dedicated infrastructure and facilities specifically designed to accommodate and care for our male bedridden patients, marking a new chapter in our mission of providing comprehensive palliative care.
